For MRCEM Primary (basic sciences), the answer flips. Pastest’s Primary platform is a polished, well-resourced product and a perfectly reasonable single-bank choice. MRCEM Success is the budget alternative with the largest Primary pool. EMF Premium is overkill at Primary level — most of its 40,000 questions are clinical SBAs aimed further up the curriculum.

For MRCEM Intermediate / SBA candidates in regions that still sit the standalone paper, MRCEM Success is the closest match to the exam blueprint with 1,800+ original SBAs and a long track record. Pastest’s EM offering in 2026 is a single product: MRCEM Primary. There is no MRCEM Intermediate platform, no MRCEM SBA platform, and no FRCEM Final SBA platform on Pastest’s site as of 30 May 2026. The Primary product carries 1,500 questions, a built-in textbook, 3D imagery and an AI tutor add-on, with three subscription lengths (£59.99 / 3 months, £69.99 / 6 months, £79.99 / 12 months). Pastest sells qbanks for MRCP, MRCS, MRCPCH, MRCGP, MSRA, PLAB, FRCA and UCAT — but not for any post-Primary EM paper.

MRCEM Success is two separate products on one brand: MRCEM Primary (3,100+ questions, with a textbook and unlimited mocks) and MRCEM Intermediate (1,800+ SBA questions, exam-recall-based, with revision notes and mock mode). The Intermediate platform was built around the older standalone MRCEM Intermediate SBA paper; UK trainees now route through FRCEM Final SBA instead, but the MRCEM Intermediate exam still runs for international candidates. Pricing is unusually flexible — £30 for 1 month up to £80 for 6 months on each platform, which means a 1-month crammer subscription is cheaper than anything Pastest or EMF offers.

EMF is the right pick if you tick any of the following:

When should you actively choose Pastest over EMF?

• You are sitting MRCEM Primary as your only EM exam in the next 12 months. EMF’s 40,000-question library is heavily weighted to clinical SBAs at MRCEM Intermediate and FRCEM Final level. Pastest’s Primary product is purpose-built for basic sciences, with strong 3D anatomy imagery that EMF doesn’t try to match.
• You want a polished, mature product backed by a large publishing team. Pastest has been in the medical revision market for decades. The interface, the textbook integration and the question editing standard are reliably high. EMF is genuinely a 2025-vintage product — fast-improving, but newer.
• You want an AI tutor. Pastest is the only one of the three with a built-in AI tutor feature. Whether you find that useful is personal — some candidates love it, some ignore it.
• You revise primarily on a native app on the Tube/commuting. Pastest has a dedicated mobile app; EMF and MRCEM Success are mobile-optimised web only.

When should you actively choose MRCEM Success over EMF?

• You are sitting MRCEM Intermediate SBA (typically international IMG candidates). MRCEM Success has 1,800+ SBAs built around exam-recall questions for that specific paper, with a 10-year track record of candidates passing first time using only this bank. EMF’s content covers the curriculum but is not specifically built for the Intermediate SBA paper.
• You’re price-sensitive and want maximum flexibility. MRCEM Success’s 1-month-at-£30 plan is genuinely useful for last-minute crammers. Nothing in EMF or Pastest matches it.
• You want exam-recall questions. MRCEM Success is explicit that its bank is built from past-paper recalls. EMF writes questions from first principles against the curriculum; both approaches have merit, but recall-led banks tend to feel closer to the real paper if the syllabus hasn’t moved much.
• You’re a “textbook-first” reviser. MRCEM Success’s 1,000+ revision notes are denser and more integrated with the questions than EMF’s 8 guideline ebooks.

Where EMF genuinely struggles — the honest list

This is the section you’d expect a self-positioning piece to skip. We’re not skipping it.

• Brand age. EMF launched in 2025. We don’t yet have a decade of post-exam testimonials. MRCEM Success has 22,000+ users since 2015 and Pastest has a comparable longer history in adjacent exams. If “everyone in my department uses it” matters to you, that’s not yet EMF.
• 40,000 is intimidating, not always useful. Most candidates can realistically work through 2,000–3,000 SBAs in a serious revision window. The headline figure is genuine, but in practice you need to use the category filters aggressively — it can paralyse a candidate who tries to “complete the bank”.
• Question quality variance. Any large rapidly-grown bank will have variance in writing quality across the library. We searched r/doctorsUK and r/JuniorDoctorsUK for the most recent threads on each bank. A few patterns emerged.

MRCEM Success is the bank most consistently named in passing. The 2024 thread on MRCEM Primary & Intermediate is representative: “MRCEM success is enough to pass both the primary and SBA — but use the textbook sections and really maximise the weeks running up [to the exam].” A 2022 trainee thread is more critical for the SBA: “the MRCEMsuccess qBank was NOT enough. I would definitely recommend combining it with a book or another qBank (?mrcemexamprep).” So the community view: solid base resource, supplement it as you approach the exam.

Pastest generates fewer EM-specific threads, which mirrors what the data shows — Pastest is genuinely a Primary-only product in EM. The discussion tends to be from MRCP and MRCS trainees, where Pastest is widely considered the gold standard.

EMF Premium is newer and accordingly has less Reddit history. The consensus advice across recent doctorsUK threads: read RCEM Learning end-to-end, do at least one large qbank fully, do mocks under timed conditions, and use a second bank only for weak topics. Which “one large qbank” is a budget and timing call, not a brand-loyalty one.

How do the three feel to actually use day to day?

EMF Premium: the platform leans into category drilling. You’ll spend most of your time inside themed sessions (e.g. “Toxicology — 25 questions, timed”) rather than randomised mocks until the last 4–6 weeks. Performance tracking is per-category, which makes the next-session decision easy: pick the category with the worst score. The timed mocks are the closest to the real FRCEM Final SBA paper structure of any product on the market right now.

Pastest: the experience is the most “polished publishing product” of the three. Questions are well-edited, the textbook is genuinely integrated rather than bolted on, the 3D anatomy imagery is unmatched at MRCEM Primary level. The AI tutor is hit-or-miss — some candidates love it for second-line explanations, others find it adds noise.

MRCEM Success: the interface is the most stripped-back of the three — almost utilitarian. That’s deliberate; the bank’s reputation rests on closeness-to-exam, not on UX. The dynamic peer-benchmarking (“you scored 64%, average is 58%”) is a useful nudge, and the unlimited mock generation means you never run out of fresh papers.

What about combining two of these — is that overkill?

For MRCEM Primary, no — one bank is usually enough, and Pastest or MRCEM Success will both get a motivated candidate over the line. Stacking two Primary banks is mostly wasted money.

For MRCEM Intermediate / FRCEM Final SBA, combining is more defensible because the question pool you really want exposure to is large. A common pattern: MRCEM Success 6-month tier as your daily-driver bank, with EMF Premium added for breadth and themed mock work — lean on Success early and EMF more heavily in the final 6-8 weeks.
